In the Fastness of the Forest

In the fastness of the forest
under bows of leafy green,
a red man walks in safety
with his wife and children.

At night his dreams are bitter,
filled with men of pale skin.
They ride great beasts.
Their weapons thunder.
They are coming to kill and plunder.

In the night a great chief trembles,
seeing the death that is now waiting.
In the morning he will seek out the shaman.
In the morning, he will look for answers.

In his dream his world changes
gone now the deer and forest.
gone the tepees of his people,
gone, his way of life forever.
In its place the land is barren,
empty of all its goodness.

In the night a chieftain wakens,
his heart is heavy from his dreaming
In the fastness of the forest,
under bows of leafy green
a red man walks in safety,
With his wife and children.
